Sofia Vergara talks to Women’s Health

The Modern Family star divulges her thoughts on fashion, men and other racy stuff.

Maxi skirts, high-waisted shorts, metallic Birkenstocks: many women love them (see the popular Man Repeller fashion blog). But Sofia Vergara? Youll never catch her in baggy drop-crotch pants. “I’m Latin, and in our culture, we dress to pick up guys, or for our boyfriends or husbands, rather than for other girls. I’ll prefer to die than wear boyfriend jeans!” she says, with a hearty laugh.

Having just finished her cover shoot for Womens Health, she shakes loose her long, wavy hair, slips into a tight pair of Hudson jeans and a green V-neck tee, and slides on what she jokingly calls her tennis shoes, a pair of studded Gucci sandals with sky-high platform heels.

Since the star of the hit Network Ten show Modern Family arrived in Miami from her native Colombia more than 15 years ago, she’s been setting the bar for what’s sexy – definitely when it comes to the bombshell look (fittingly, she’s the face of CoverGirl’s Bombshell mascara). And though Sofia, 42, may have pinup- girl curves, it’s refreshing to hear that her idea of what’s hot is, aptly, very modern.

These days, being sexy is all about being healthy and fit, she says: “On Instagram, I see more and more women who work out, have muscles and eat healthy. I follow [some] for inspiration.” Clearly, this inspiration is paying off for Sofia: that famous photo she posted on Instagram, wearing little more than a skimpy bikini? Yowza.

Beyond swimsuits, at the core of her style philosophy is the idea that sexiness is not “one size fits all”: Sofia has infused that sensibility into her eponymous clothing line, which offers styles for every body type. The catchphrase is “Work with what you’ve got.” She says: “If you have nice cleavage or legs, show it off. Nobody’s a Miss Universe, so you have to take advantage of the one or two things you have that are good.”

GLAMOUR GIRL
Though she’s a natural beauty with smooth olive skin and a million-dollar smile (exhibit A: her gorgeous pared-down pic on our cover), the look she craves is not without effort. She’s a fan of red lipstick for special occasions, and mascara “Is the one thing I cant live without. Some people say, ‘I feel the most sexy when I just wake up’, but I feel the most sexy after I have showered, blow-dried my hair and [put on] full make-up,” Sofia says. (She’s not alone: 32 per cent of the women who took the survey said the same about a full face of make-up.)

Sofia has similar feelings about fragrance: partial to scents that are musky and sweet, but not too feminine like certain ones from Hermes and Tom Ford – today she’s wearing J’adore by Dior. “I put it everywhere,” she says. “Sometimes my hairstylist gets upset and says, ‘Your hair is all oily underneath!'”

Besides getting oil on the underside of her hair, does this woman do anything that isn’t wildly beguiling? Turns out there is one thing: “I cannot sleep without socks,” she reveals. “I used to always be barefoot in Latin America, but here it gets cold.” Breaking into a grin, she adds, “Well, not during the sexy in bed!”

THE HEAT IS ON
So what actually happens in the bedroom of one of the world’s sexiest women? The most important thing, says Sofia, is for a woman to try a little. “It doesn’t mean you have to be perfect or have [great] abs, but dont walk around the house with no bra and hanging tits.” OK, so subtlety is not her strong suit. But her ability to be irreverent and hot makes her appealing to men and women alike – and as a result, she seems to realise every dream. That clothing line for Kmart in the US? Huge success. She’s released a sultry oriental-floral scent, named Sofia, with notes of blackberry, Colombian rose and orchid, and earthy woods. And, oh yeah, she also happens to be TVs highest-paid actor, having netted a reported $31.7 million in a year, and she continues to land sought-after roles.

On the big screen this year she’s played the sexually ravenous client of a male prostitute in Fading Gigolo, alongside Sharon Stone and Woody Allen, and Jon Favreau’s ex-wife in Chef, opposite Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey, Jr.

For the Modern Family episode shot in Australia, Sofia was spotted on Bondi Beach in a colourful crisscross bathing suit that inspired fawning blog posts. Of the constant focus on her voluptuous figure, Sofia says: “I’ll tell you something. I’ve always been known for my boobs, but it pisses me off, because I do also have a great ass!” Funny, cheeky and totally down-to-earth: now that’s sexy.
